The government now proposes that the 10-Year Settlement Route will make many migrants wait a full decade before gaining eligibility for ILR. Previously, individuals obtained Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after only five years. However, this proposal has not yet been implemented, and the existing five-year settlement route still applies to eligible categories. Meanwhile, the Home Office continues to allow exemptions for family-based and humanitarian applications. Consequently, applicants under work or skilled routes must plan carefully for potential longer residence periods and higher renewal costs if the reform takes effect.
